October  2011 Fishing Report

Ahhhh , it’s the first day of October. I just opened the windows of my house this morning. Cool air from the north is spilling in and the wind is blowing from the north west. The first cool front is here in the Sarasota area. It is nice!!! I did have to cancel my first trip due to a cold front , but I am not complaining. We are ready for the fall weather.

Just yesterday , I had out a good client of mine and his son . Doug and Johnny arrived at the bait shop and wanted to catch some fish out in the gulf. The beach water was
flat, and the sun was out. We started out on a close reef and caught some nice Spanish mackerel on live bait. The mackerel have invaded the area in a short period of time . Pretty standard for this time of year. We caught about a dozen of the fast running fish before we set out for something bigger. Johnny wanted to catch something  much bigger. We went out a little further and stopped on a spot that I have been catching some nice black tip sharks. Wasn’t long before Doug and john were both hooked into some nice sharks. They took a while to get to the boat and we were able to get a few pictures.

While we were fishing , Johnny kept talking about the big barracuda that was under the boat. I saw him too. He looked like the same monster that nearly jumped into our boat the day before. The fish took a mackerel and proceeded to jump out of the water and almost into the boat. It was scary!! Johnny wouldn’t stop talking about this big cuda. He said he wanted to catch it. At that time , I didn’t think we could get him to bite , but I was wrong. The big coda took my bait right beside the boat !! He made two huge jumps and took off like a missal. Johnny and Doug landed the big fish  after a long fight. We let the fish catch his breath and he swam away  with no problems.

The mackerel action should get better and better. The kings are what we are really waiting for. October and November will be great for them. The flats fishing will also get better and better. The new 18 foot shallow sport is working out tremendously. We are so excited to have this new boat. Everyone who has been on it is amazed at the ride. It is like being on a airboat. Navigating the super skinny waters of the flats is so much fun in this boat. 3” of depth is its favorite running  range. It is also a very
comfortable fishing boat.

The red fishing has been pretty good. We are getting them on every trip. The big schools can be hard to find some days , but we have caught fish on every trip. This big red was with my friend  and neighbor Ben. We set out on a, just before dark, run and caught some monsters. What a evening. We have plenty of time to get out so let us know when you have time to get out on the water.

Tight lines from captain Tom Jr.
